Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards is requesting a federal emergency declaration from the Biden administration regarding the saltwater intrusion at the lower Mississippi River.

Officials fear it could impact the water supply in the region.

The Army Corps of Engineers is beginning work on a project this week that they say will help with the issue, but they'll need to work quickly.

It's estimated that the gulf water could make its way to New Orleans water treatment plants by next month, and they cannot handle water with high salinity levels.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has already signed an emergency declaration.
