High-speed passenger rail may connect New Orleans and Baton Rouge by two years from now.

The idea is popular with residents of both cities as well as the surrounding parishes and project leaders say the companies that own the rail lines are finally warming up to the idea.

State and federal dollars will upgrade the rail lines to allow the trains to run at 90 miles an hour.

Passengers will be able to ride from New Orleans to Baton Rouge and back, or any of the cities in between.

The trains could be rolling by mid-2025.
