The Baton Rouge Fire Department is announcing the death of one of its fire captains after a battle with cancer.

Capt. Phillip Paternostro died on Monday at age 54.

Fire department officials say Louisiana law presumes that the type of cancer Paternostro came down with is caused by his work as a firefighter.

Paternostro had been with the fire department since 2000. He was promoted to captain in 2018.
