Baton Rouge police say changes in the law are bringing down the numbers of drag racing incidents.

On Wednesday, Deputy Chief Troy Lawrence Sr. told the Metro Council Meeting that tougher penalties for both drivers and spectators is helping police get a handle on the problem.

Under a change to the city ordinance, first-time offenders could face a $1,000 fine and have their car impounded for at least 15 days.

So far this year, BRPD has made three felony arrests, seven misdemeanor arrests, and impounded 35 cars.
