East Baton Rouge Parish residents may soon see a slight increase in their phone bills as a result of an effort to improve 911 service.

The parish Communications District is proposing a 911 fee rate hike to pay for day-to-day operations, maintenance, and upgrades to the phone system.

If approved, the resulting annual increase would be $4.32 for residential landlines, $4.80 for cellphones, and $5.88 for business landlines.

The increase would generate more than $2 million a year.

The board will discuss the potential rate increase at a special meeting on May 31.
