NHC Reduces Katrina Death Toll By Nearly 23%

Federal officials are reducing the official death toll of Hurricane Katrina.

The National Hurricane Center updated the number last week to reflect new research into the impact of the storm.

Katrina was a Category 3 storm that made landfall near New Orleans on August 29th, 2005 with a storm surge that resulted in catastrophic flooding.

The original estimate of more than 1,800 direct and indirect deaths from Katrina has been reduced to 1,392.

Katrina is still one of the three deadliest hurricanes ever to make landfall on the mainland United States.
