Voters in five states will consider rewriting their constitutions this year to remove outdated language relating to slavery.

The Louisiana State Senate voted unanimously last week to put a measure on the November ballot to modernize the state constitution to explicitly prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude.

A newly proposed state constitution in Alabama would eliminate a line that allows for involuntary servitude only as punishment for a crime.

Voters in Tennessee, Vermont, and Oregon will vote on similar changes to their state constitutions.
