The city is mourning the loss of a public servant.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome confirmed yesterday that former Metro Councilwoman Lorri Burgess had passed away at the age of 56.

Officials say Burgess had succumbed to her long battle with cancer.

Prior to her death, the 56-year-old served on the council for 10 years and became the first black woman to serve as mayor pro term.
