Sunshine Bridge Reopens After Getting Struck By Tanker Ship

Officials say the Sunshine Bridge is open again to traffic after being temporarily closed yesterday when a tanker ship ran into it.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the bridge was struck by the tanker ship Dank Silver around 1:30 p.m. which led to the closure so the structure could be inspected.

Officials with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said the Dank Silver hit a fender system that protects the bridge.

Inspection crews determined the fender system performed as designed and the bridge was unharmed.
