Baton Rouge Police Motorcycle Officer Dies After Crash Friday

A Baton Rouge Police motorcycle officer has died following what the department called a "serious crash" Friday afternoon.

31-year-old Cpl. Shane Totty was struck by a truck in the 6400 block of Jones Creek near Tiger Bend around 2:30 p.m. while he was part of a funeral procession. BRPD said that Totty suffered critical injuries and confirmed his death a few hours later.

"Please continue to keep the Totty family and our department in your prayers," read a Facebook post from Baton Rouge Police.

East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome offered her heartfelt condolences to the Totty family and ordered all flags at parish public buildings to fly at half-staff until his burial.

"Our community mourns Cpl. Totty, one of BRPD’s best and brightest young officers who was wholly dedicated to serving the people of Baton Rouge," Broome said. "Every day our men and women in blue put their lives on the line to protect the citizens of this great city. Please keep his family, friends, and fellow officers in your prayers during this extremely difficult time."
