A Denham Springs man is headed to prison for 19 years after pleading no contest to charges of vehicular homicide and negligent injuring.

Jerry Ervin III, who was sentenced Thursday, was legally drunk when in April 2016 he plowed through traffic triangles set out to warn of an earlier accident, his SUV striking and killing two Baton Rouge children and injuring a teen helping at the scene.

The earlier crash happened after a trash compactor fell out of a pickup onto LA-447 near Walker. The driver of that vehicle, who was also intoxicated, is serving five years in prison.
