BATON ROUGE- City leaders approved a plan to take control over busy roads from the state, streamlining and expediting road construction on the major thoroughfares.

Wednesday, the metro council approved a move to take Government Street, a section of Nicholson Drive, and River Road from the control of the state. The move will take the red tape out of repairs.

Now, DPW will be able to decide about important fixes that will make the drive on those streets easier.

The state offered incentives for the switch, including repairs before the change happens and millions of dollars.

"There is around $13 million that we can use for local projects to help ease congestion internally," DPW Director David Guillory said.

Later, more roads could be transferred through the program.
