Recalled mayor's budget fails

PORT ALLEN (WBRZ) - On her last scheduled week in office, recalled Mayor Deedy Slaughter's attempt to pass her proposed budget failed Wednesday night.

Slaughter's budget died when she did not get support for a "second," which moved the budget forward for a vote by the council. Slaughter called the special meeting earlier this week after city voters successfully recalled her from office. After the meeting Wednesday night, she said the budget is no longer in her hands.

"[The budget is] something that the city council as well as the incoming interim mayor would have to work out and make [a] decision," said Slaughter.

The Registrar of Voters certified the election on Tuesday. Slaughter has not said if she plans to appeal the decision. If she doesn't, her last day in office will be Monday.

Once Slaughter steps down the city council will have 20 days to appoint an interim mayor. Members have said one of their first priorities once Slaughter leaves is passing a budget before city departments run out of money.

Last week, the Port Allen Fire Department received permission to tap into other budgeted funds to keep paying firefighters.

The budget was due in July. Chief Financial Officer Audrey McCain told WBRZ News 2 some vendors haven't been paid because the city still doesn't have a full budget.
