Recall petition filed against Port Allen council member

PORT ALLEN - Citizens of Port Allen filed a petition to recall a member of the city council today, one day after signatures to recall the city's mayor were filed with the state.

Today's petition seeks the recall of R. J. Loupe, an at-large council member who also served as interim mayor after Derek Lewis' resignation.

Loupe and two other council members filed an injunction against Mayor Deedy Slaughter earlier this year claiming she took several unlawful actions involving the city's money and bank accounts.

Organizers of the petition will now have to collect 1,286 signatures in order to file for a recall election. Because Loupe is an at-large council member, those signatures can come from any citizen living in Port Allen.

The petition was filed a day after organizers of a separate recall effort against Slaughter filed their collected signatures to be certified.
