NAACP wants more, not fewer school board members

Posted July 18th, 2014 @ 1:19am

BATON ROUGE- The NAACP protested with signs outside Thursday's East Baton Rouge Parish School Board meeting.

The group believes talks about redistricting the board and possibly reducing the number of seats will lead to segregation and discrimination among the board. Plans are being considered to move from eleven members to seven. Others include a board with nine or ten members, too.

The NAACP believes reworking districts will remove African American representatives from the board.

Outside the meeting Thursday, the group suggested a board with as many as fifteen representatives.

No decision was made about redistricting Thursday. But, there is a special meeting on July 24th to discuss the options.
