The Mayor is urging all citizens to stay aware of the potential for a tropical weather situation as we move into the weekend.  Tropical Storm Karen formed this morning and is forecast to continue moving North-Northwest in the Gulf of Mexico for the next 24 hours, before taking a turn to the East.  National Hurricane Center forecasters are predicting Karen to become a Hurricane tomorrow, but downgrade back to a Tropical Storm before making landfall.  “As we continue to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens, we are encouraging everyone to pay close attention to this tropical system and to remain aware of your surroundings,” stated Holden

“Please remember the Buddy System and use this as a chance to check on the elderly and talk to your neighbors about how you can work together to ensure everyone is Red Stick Ready. Remember to have your Family Disaster Kits updated with the items you need including extra medicine, water, flashlights and batteries to last the first four (4) days.  Also, be sure to top off all fuel supplies.”

The Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP) will continue to coordinate with local and state officials throughout the duration of this weather event.  Stay tuned in to your local television and radio stations for the most up-to-date information.  Should you need any further information regarding this tropical weather situation, please contact MOHSEP at (225) 389-2100.
